Health Check Up in Railay

A general check is one of those things people intend to do at home and never quite schedule. Doing it here is often easier — no waiting list, no referral, and results the same day or the next. A health check up in Railay covers bloods, blood pressure and a doctor review, and it is particularly worth doing if you are living several boat rides from a hospital.

What a standard check includes

The core panel covers the things that are both common and silent:

  • Full blood count — anaemia, infection, platelets
  • Blood glucose — diabetes and pre-diabetes
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Liver function
  • Kidney function and electrolytes
  • Thyroid function
  • Blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation
  • Height, weight and BMI

A doctor reviews the results and goes through them with you. That review is the part that turns a sheet of numbers into something useful, and it is why we do not simply hand over a printout.

What can be added

Vitamin D, which is more often low than people expect even in a tropical country, because the sensible response to this sun is shade and sunscreen.

Iron studies for persistent tiredness, which is one of the commonest reasons anyone books a check in the first place. Uric acid where there is joint pain suggesting gout. Hepatitis B and C screening. Sexual health screening where relevant, which can be included discreetly within a general check rather than as a separate visit.

For anyone over forty, or with a family history worth taking seriously, a resting ECG and a wider cardiovascular assessment are worth discussing.

Who benefits most from doing this here

Long-stay residents and seasonal workers, who often go years between checks because their normal healthcare is in another country and a trip home is expensive.

Anyone on regular medication needing periodic monitoring — thyroid replacement, blood pressure drugs, anything affecting kidney or liver function. That monitoring does not pause because you moved to a beach.

And anyone who has noticed something and been putting off asking about it. Persistent tiredness, unexplained weight change, thirst that is out of proportion to the heat, or breathlessness on exertion that is new. Those are worth a check rather than an explanation you have talked yourself into.

Why living remotely changes the calculation

Railay is a wonderful place to live and a poor place to have an undiagnosed chronic condition. There is no hospital, no imaging and no specialist, and everything beyond the ordinary is a boat ride away.

That is an argument for knowing your baseline rather than an argument for anxiety. Someone who knows their blood pressure is high and is treating it has a very different risk profile from someone with the same reading who has never had it measured.

It also means that when something does go wrong, whoever treats you has numbers to compare against instead of guessing what normal looks like for you. On a transfer to Krabi Town, that is genuinely useful.

The seasonal pattern is worth naming too. People who work here tend to arrive in November, work without a proper day off until April, and leave exhausted — then repeat it the following year. Blood pressure, blood sugar and liver numbers all drift under that kind of load, and they drift quietly. A check at the start of a season and another at the end costs very little and tells you considerably more than one taken at a random moment.

How the visit runs

Come in fasted if you can — eight to twelve hours without food, water encouraged. Early morning is easiest for most people, and it means the fasting happens while you are asleep.

The bloods take a couple of minutes. Blood pressure, oxygen saturation, height and weight take a few more. Most people are out inside twenty minutes.

Results come back the same day or the next depending on the panel, and the doctor review happens once they are in. You leave with a printed English report showing every value against its reference range.

What we do with an abnormal result

Most abnormal results are mild and manageable — slightly raised cholesterol, a vitamin D level worth correcting, liver numbers that reflect a holiday rather than a disease.

Those are explained and given a plan, which is usually specific rather than a lecture about diet. Where medication is warranted we will say so, and where it is not, we will say that too.

Anything needing investigation beyond the peninsula — imaging, a specialist opinion, an endoscopy — is arranged rather than mentioned in passing. Our Ao Nang clinic is on the mainland, holds the same records, and is the usual next step before anything larger.

Certificates, and checks with a specific purpose

A general check is not the same as a certificate, and people frequently want both.

If you need documentation for a work permit, a visa, a diving course or an employer, that is a defined examination with a defined form — see medical certificates. Tell us at the start which you need, because the requirements differ and doing the wrong one means doing it twice.

If you simply want to know where you stand, the general check is the right thing, and there is no form to fill in at the end of it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast?

Yes, ideally eight to twelve hours for cholesterol and glucose. Water is fine and encouraged. Early morning is easiest.

How long does it take?

Around twenty minutes in the clinic. Results come back the same day or the next, depending on the panel.

How much does a health check cost?

It depends on the panel, and you are quoted before anything is taken. Additional tests can be added or dropped.

Do I need an appointment?

No, though coming early in the morning fits the fasting requirement better.

Will I get a report I can take home?

Yes — a printed English report with every value and its reference range, which any doctor anywhere can read.

Is this the same as a medical certificate?

No. A certificate is a defined examination for a specific purpose. Tell us which you need at the start — see medical certificates.

What if something comes back abnormal?

A doctor goes through it with you and gives you a plan. Anything needing imaging or a specialist is arranged rather than simply mentioned.

Who treats you here, and who is behind them

The clinic on Railay is run by experienced English-speaking nurses. Behind them sits Doctor Ao Nang Takecare Medical Clinic in Ao Nang, which Takecare Clinic Railay works together with as one service rather than two businesses: shared doctors, shared records, shared treatment plans. In practice that means a doctor is pulled in the moment your case needs one — to review it, to prescribe, or to come across to the peninsula in person. If you later cross to the mainland, whoever sees you is already holding your notes and you are not starting the story again. It also means the second opinion that would otherwise cost you a boat and half a day costs a phone call.

Getting seen

Opening hours are 8am–10pm daily. Outside them we are still reachable 24 hours by phone, WhatsApp and Line, so when something happens at eleven at night the right move is to message us, not to lie awake deciding whether it can wait. No appointment is needed at any point — walk in, or reach us on +66 81 718 9080, WhatsApp or Line. If you would rather not move, ask for a doctor resort visit and we will come to you. And if this turns out to be something the peninsula cannot handle, that call is also how the boat and the hospital transfer start moving.
